Twenty-two water experts of the Chinese province of Jiangsu, visited the World Water Academy in July. The experts work for municipalities and companies in the province. They were informed about our approach on lifelong learning in the water sector. We shared our concept and experiences on "For professionals, by professionals". The fact that lifelong learning is not a legal requirement but a policy of the Dutch water sector aroused astonishment and asked for clarification. Dutch (water) organizations see the staff as their most important and precious asset; Learning, training and development is important for those who will work (over 40 years) until their retirement. Agnes Maenhout and Johan Oost also gave a mini presentation on the didactical approach. The philosophy of Confucius on learning and education is still valid and of use after 2,500 years. World Water Academy embedded this philosophy in the training programmes and in the Training of Trainers.
The Chinese delegation made a study tour in the South-West of the Netherlands, invited and organized by Regional Water authority Brabantse Delta water in Breda. The Water Authority has a friendly relationship with Jiangsu Province and with various municipalities. This relationship also exists on provincial and municipal level. The aim of the study tour is to provide insight on integrated water management. The group visited industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants and learned about innovative methods. The urban water management policy was discussed as well as the regulations and enforcement. Education and business around (waste) water were explained.
