Water retaining structures are crucial to prevent the land for flood events and its negative consequences. The maintenance of the dikes is important role in the functioning of the dikes in normal circumstances, but in critical situations as well. Inspectors on the dike have an crucial role to find (potential) weaknesses in the dikes. So on a day-to-day basis, weak links must be recognized and adequate measures should be taken in case of a threatening failure.

This course focus on the your role as dike inspector, who has the good view of the dike conditions and potential weaknesses of the dike. The knowledge gained in the course Basic knowledge of Water retaining structures will be transferred in the day-to-day dike inspection routine. The participants can execute the visual dike inspection on various dikes with each its own character. And according to the regulations set by the water authorities. Also the communication with the water authorities and some simple repairs during the inspection are part of this course.

Special attention is paid on critical events when a high water level occurs. In this case the failure mechanisms are different and so the dike inspection as well. In the trouble shooting the communication line differs as well.

  • Introduction: History of dike construction and maintaining
  • Procedure / organisation for maintaining dikes
  • Registering the dikes
  • Influence of water on dikes in both regular and high water inspections
  • Dike inspection routine: daily / monthly / yearly
  • Knowledge about failure mechanisms
  • How to obtain failure mechanisms in practices
  • How to quantify and prioritize failure mechanisms (categorization dike in dike conditions)
  • How to communicate with the water authorities
  • How to protect the dike by simple (preventively) measures
